Shall Remain Nameless
Honestly the SOPA terrifies me. And in some way it bothers my pride and morals. Imagine the world today without free access to the internet. The internet became a primal necessity for society today. What is the internet. It is an infinite relay of information. And media.
What bothers me about the SOPA is how it affects all angles of my personal integrity. I love music, I love the arts. But it would be wrong to censor these media permanently. But then it would be against the law not to. But then art should be free for everyone to enjoy. What bothers me the most is how I don’t know exactly how I should react to this situation.
We’ve all been living off piracy. I’m pretty sure the music you’re listening to right now came from a cloud site or something. When was the last time you actually bought this album from the music store? When was the last time you’ve seen this movie in the theaters?
In a way we’re killing off the business of the people behind these movies and hits. They make money off the sales they make from people who purchase their CD’s or watch their movies. That’s wrong, I suppose. No, it is. But if you’d think about it, these people are pretty rich today. Imagine how much richer they could be if all the songs you downloaded were actually legit purchases?
But I like getting these resources for free because it’s convenient, and I don’t want to think of the arts as something economical. I’m pro liberal. I like to think of art as something the world should know about, not something exclusive to those who have access to money or something. In the early centuries people didn’t need to pay much to hear music. There were street performers, and performers in general who performed because they’re passionate about it. That is what music is supposed to be about right? And art? And theater? And literature? Music shouldn’t be made to sell out, because that destroys the very definition of what the arts is.
These are the times I wish I lived in the olden times, mainly because life was simpler. No laws, no restrictions, no conflicts. Everyone lived off the land. Everything was natural. Organic, even. Emotions were pure, and expression was never held back. There were no first world problems because there was no such thing as first world, nor a concrete concept for a world for that matter.
But then we developed into these power hungry beings we are today. Progress, growth, the increasing population, global warming, everything is exponential. We continue to require more in order to survive. We need more. We can’t survive without these needs and wants that govern our survival as a race and species.
Truth is we need to lessen our population. We need to lessen our needs. We need to reduce everything. See our world can only contain so much. I won’t be surprised if one day we’ll be able to live in the ocean depths just to create more habitable property for people to reside in. Then once we run out of horizontal space we build higher. More condos, more skyscrapers. I fear the day when my grandchildren won’t know what a lawn or tree is. Heck they already won’t know what casette tapes and floppy disks are.
Regarding SOPA, I don’t know. I’m against it completely, because honestly we’ve become so used to piracy maybe we should just ignore it already. I mean if we’re against that stops piracy, maybe it shouldn’t have to exist anymore?
But no. Laws against piracy are still necessary to certain extents. As I said, although I’m completely against it, the people behind these online pirated resources need their income from what we pirate. It can’t be helped if they demand what is due them.
I, I really don’t know anymore at this point. I hate it when I don’t know, but then I like this feeling of not knowing, because you know there’s still an answer out there that hasn’t been touched yet, because I don’t believe in ideas black and white. There’s always something that can be done in between them, some form of mediation to satisfy both sides of the dilemma.
But let’s see what happens. I read in an article that some officials already dropped their support on SOPA. Everything that does happen, I believe, will be for the better. SOPA, on the other hand, is something I don’t see happening nor is something that will benefit the majority. Something has to be done about piracy, but it should be from a reasonable angle, not an extremistic technocide.
But for now,
Fuck SOPA.
